Luna’s Birthday Bandana Bash

One year of Luna

It was hard to believe Luna was turning one. It felt like yesterday that she was a tiny puppy tumbling over her own paws. Now she was a confident young dog with opinions about leaves, a talent for napping, and a family who adored her. Ahmad decided one year of Luna deserved a proper celebration. Invitations were issued to Buddy and Mac, who RSVP’d by wagging.

The bandana

The birthday bandana was coral pink with tiny white paw prints. When Ahmad tied it around Luna’s neck, she sat very still, sensing the occasion. Then she caught sight of herself in the hallway mirror and did a double take. She turned her head left, then right, admiring the bandana from every angle. Buddy sniffed it respectfully. Mac tried to eat the corner. The bandana survived.

Decorations

The garden was decorated with paper bunting in sage and sky blue, and a banner that read HAPPY BIRTHDAY LUNA in slightly wobbly letters. Luna inspected every decoration personally, sniffing each flag. One low-hanging piece of bunting proved irresistible, and by party time it had a small Luna-shaped bite taken out of it. It was declared part of the design.

The cake

The birthday cake was made from mashed banana, peanut butter, and oats, with a yogurt frosting swirl. One candle, for one year. Everyone sang, Luna tilted her head at the strange ritual, and then Ahmad lifted her up to blow out the candle, which she did by sneezing directly on it. The cake was divided three ways, because Buddy and Mac had strong feelings about fairness, and Luna got the biggest piece with the frosting swirl.

Present time

Luna unwrapped her presents with great enthusiasm and zero technique: she simply shook each one until the paper tore. She received a squeaky hedgehog, a rope tug, and a new blanket in soft cream. The hedgehog was an instant favorite. It squeaked, Luna squeaked back at it, and the two of them had a long conversation that nobody else could follow.

The sneaky thief

During the present chaos, Mac quietly dragged the rope tug behind the garden shed. He was discovered twenty minutes later, sitting on it, looking innocent. When Ahmad pointed at the rope, Mac looked at Buddy. Buddy looked at the sky. Luna, birthday girl and diplomat, walked over, picked up one end of the rope, and invited Mac to play tug. The thief became the playmate. Justice, Luna-style.

Party games

The afternoon featured a treasure hunt with hidden treats, a best-sit contest that Buddy won by sitting before anyone asked, and a relay race that dissolved into chaos when all three puppies ran the wrong way together. Luna wore her bandana through everything, slightly crooked by the end, completely unbothered. She had mastered the art of celebrating.

Field notes

A puppy birthday party is about fun, not perfection. Keep food puppy-safe, presents simple, and the guest list small. A bandana, a homemade cake, and good company are all it takes to make a one-year-old dog feel like the most loved puppy in the world.
