Expedition briefing
Ahmad announced a forest walk, and Buddy immediately assumed command. He inspected the leashes, sniffed the treat pouch, and positioned himself at the front of the group. Mac carried a stick he had selected for the occasion. Luna brought her enthusiasm. The trail wound into tall trees where the light fell in green shafts, and the air smelled of pine and damp earth. Buddy lifted his nose, took a deep breath, and marched forward. The expedition had begun.
The stream crossing
The trail crossed a shallow stream on flat stones. Buddy stepped onto the first stone, tested it, and crossed with the careful dignity of a general. Luna hopped across, splashing herself. Mac stopped in the middle of the stream, looked down at the moving water, and decided to drink it. He drank for a long time while everyone waited. When he finished, he shook himself all over the group and continued, refreshed.
Squirrel surveillance
A squirrel appeared on a low branch and chattered at the puppies. All three froze. Buddy pointed with his nose, the classic patrol stance. The squirrel flicked its tail and vanished up the trunk. Buddy tracked it with his eyes until it disappeared into the leaves, then looked at Ahmad as if to say the perimeter was secure. Mac was less professional: he barked once, startled himself, and hid behind Luna.
The perfect stick
Mac’s original stick was abandoned within minutes for a better one, which was then abandoned for the perfect stick: long, straight, with a satisfying weight. He carried it proudly for a full kilometer, navigating narrow trail sections sideways. When the trail widened, he trotted up to Buddy and showed him the stick. Buddy sniffed it respectfully. It was, both agreed, an excellent stick.
The clearing
The trail opened into a sunlit clearing with a fallen log. Ahmad called a rest stop, and the puppies flopped onto the moss. Luna rolled on her back, wiggling with joy. Buddy climbed the log and surveyed the clearing like a captain on a ship. Mac chewed his perfect stick with deep contentment. A butterfly landed on Luna’s nose, and she went cross-eyed looking at it until it fluttered away.
The muddy section
Every forest trail has a muddy section, and this one was magnificent. Buddy tried to pick his way around it. Luna walked straight through the middle. Mac lay down in it. By the time they emerged, Luna was speckled, Mac was transformed, and Buddy, who had slipped on the last step, had muddy paws too. Ahmad laughed and promised a bath. The puppies looked at each other and agreed the mud had been worth it.
The walk home
The return leg was quieter. Tired legs, full hearts. Buddy still walked in front, but his march had become a contented amble. Luna stayed close to Ahmad’s side. Mac carried his stick all the way home, refusing to drop it even for treats. When the car came into view, all three found a last burst of energy and raced the final hundred meters, because an expedition should always end with a sprint.
Field notes
Forest trails are wonderful for dogs, with a few precautions: keep vaccinations current, check for ticks afterwards, bring water, and keep your dog close in areas with wildlife. A tired, muddy, happy dog is the sign of a perfect expedition.
