Buddy and the Great Park Picnic

Picnic planning

Buddy took picnic planning seriously. He inspected the basket, sniffed the blanket, and approved the spot Ahmad chose under the big oak tree. The park was alive with weekend energy: children playing, dogs walking, and the smell of a hundred different lunches. Buddy sat by the basket with the air of a head waiter, ready to oversee the operation.

The blanket

The picnic blanket was spread, the food unpacked, and the puppies arranged around it. Luna sat daintily on the corner. Buddy took the position nearest the basket, for supervisory purposes. Mac lay with his chin on the blanket edge, eyes fixed on the sandwiches, in a pose of such intense longing that a passing child laughed out loud.

Sandwich security

The sandwiches were the main security concern. Buddy positioned himself between Mac and the food, a furry barrier of pure determination. Mac tried the direct approach, the sneaky approach, and the I am just stretching my neck approach. Each time, Buddy shifted slightly, blocking the way without ever looking at Mac. It was a masterclass in passive defense.

The duck incident

A duck waddled over from the pond, eyeing the picnic with professional interest. Luna was fascinated. Buddy was torn between his guard duties and his curiosity. Mac saw his chance: with Buddy distracted by the duck, he inched toward the sandwiches. But Luna, the unexpected hero, barked at the duck, which quacked loudly, which startled Mac, who fell over. Sandwich security maintained.

Puppy picnic portions

Ahmad had packed puppy-safe picnic portions: carrot sticks, apple slices, and small pieces of plain chicken. The puppies ate theirs with great enthusiasm, and then watched the humans eat with expressions of deep philosophical interest in the nature of fairness. Buddy received an extra carrot for his security work. Mac received his portion after a brief lecture on patience.

Post-lunch games

After lunch came games. Fetch with a tennis ball, which Buddy won by bringing the ball back every single time. A game of chase, which Luna won by being the fastest. And a wrestling match, which Mac won by refusing to stop. The oak tree provided shade, the grass was soft, and the afternoon stretched out golden and perfect.

The walk home

Packing up was almost as fun as setting up. The puppies helped by carrying things: Buddy carried the empty food container, Luna carried a napkin, and Mac carried his stick, which he had found at the park and refused to leave behind. They walked home tired and happy, with the smell of grass and sunshine in their fur.

Field notes

Park picnics are wonderful with dogs, with a little planning. Bring puppy-safe food, fresh water, and a blanket to mark your spot. Keep dogs leashed where required, clean up thoroughly, and watch for food scraps that are not dog-safe. A well-guarded sandwich is a happy sandwich.
