Luna and the Rainy Window Watch

Rain day

Rain drummed on the windows, and the garden was a blur of gray. No walks, no garden games, no puddle championships. Luna sat on the window seat, chin on the sill, and watched the raindrops race down the glass. It was disappointing, until Luna decided that if she could not go out in the rain, she would make the rain come to her, in a manner of speaking.

The raindrop races

Luna invented the raindrop races. She picked two drops at the top of the window and watched them slide down, merging with other drops, splitting, speeding up. Her chosen drop won three races in a row. She barked at it in celebration, which fogged up the glass, which she then drew a paw print in. It was, she decided, an excellent game.

Buddy joins

Buddy climbed onto the window seat, which was really only big enough for one puppy, and squeezed in beside Luna. He watched the rain for a while, then picked his own raindrop. His drop lost. He picked another. It lost too. Luna pretended not to notice his losing streak, which was kind of her. Buddy pretended he was not competing, which fooled no one.

Mac’s contribution

Mac could not fit on the window seat, so he sat on the floor below and narrated the rain. Every particularly loud patter got a bark of commentary. When thunder rumbled in the distance, Mac looked at Ahmad for reassurance, received a calm pat, and decided thunder was just sky barking. He barked back once, politely, and the thunder did not reply. Mac considered this a win.

Indoor adventures

When the raindrop races got old, the puppies invented indoor adventures. They played hide and seek behind the sofa, had a wrestling tournament on the rug, and helped Ahmad with the laundry by sitting in the basket. Luna discovered that a cardboard box, combined with imagination, could be a castle, a boat, or a very small cave.

The sun returns

By late afternoon, the rain stopped and the sun broke through, turning every leaf and blade of grass into glitter. The puppies rushed to the door, and Ahmad let them into the sparkling garden. The air smelled fresh and clean. Luna shook the rain off the bushes by running through them, Buddy inspected the new puddles, and Mac found that the wet grass made for excellent zoomies.

Evening

That evening, tired from a day of indoor games and outdoor splashing, the puppies curled up together. Luna rested her head on the window seat, looking out at the clear night sky. Rainy days, she decided, were not so bad. They had raindrop races, and cardboard castles, and the wonderful moment when the sun comes back. Every kind of day had something good in it.

Field notes

Rainy days are perfect for indoor enrichment. Puzzle toys, training games, and cardboard boxes keep puppies busy. A window seat with a view turns bad weather into entertainment. And remember: the sun always comes back.
