Heat wave
The summer sun beat down, and even the shade was warm. The puppies flopped on the cool kitchen tiles, panting. Ahmad had an idea. He dragged the small plastic pool into the garden, filled it with cool water, and stepped back. The puppies stared. Mac stood up, walked over, and touched the water with his nose. It was cool. It was wonderful. He stepped in.
First splash
Mac stood in the pool, water up to his ankles, and looked around with an expression of pure bliss. Then he discovered splashing. He pawed at the water, sending droplets flying. He bit at the ripples. He spun in a circle, creating a whirlpool. Luna watched from the edge, fascinated. Buddy watched from the shade, pretending to be too dignified for such things. He lasted two minutes.
Pool party
Soon all three were in the pool. It was a tight fit, but nobody minded. Luna lay down in the water with a sigh of relief. Buddy stood in the middle, water dripping off his belly, looking refreshed. Mac splashed them both, was splashed back, and declared it the best day of the summer. Ahmad added a few floating toys, and the pool party was officially underway.
The hose
Ahmad picked up the garden hose and created a gentle arc of water over the pool. The puppies went wild. Mac jumped to catch the stream, Luna snapped at the droplets, and Buddy stood under the arc like it was a waterfall spa treatment. The garden echoed with happy barks and splashes. A neighbor peeked over the fence, laughed, and went to get their own dog.
Water games
The puppies invented water games. Bobbing for toys, which Mac won by cheating and using his paws. The splash contest, which Luna won with a spectacular belly flop. And the relax event, which Buddy won by floating a toy on his back while lying perfectly still. The pool, which had seemed small at first, turned out to be exactly the right size for three happy puppies.
Cool down
As the afternoon wore on, the puppies moved from playing to simply cooling off. They lay in the shallow water, chins on the pool edge, watching the clouds. The heat had broken, the water was perfect, and there was nowhere else they wanted to be. Mac floated a leaf like a boat. Luna closed her eyes. Buddy sighed contentedly.
After the pool
When they finally climbed out, the puppies shook themselves in sequence, creating a rainbow in the sunlight. Ahmad toweled them dry, and they flopped onto the grass, cool and happy. The pool was emptied, but Mac sat beside it, looking at Ahmad with hopeful eyes. The message was clear: tomorrow, again. Ahmad promised. Some traditions are worth repeating.
Field notes
A splash pool is a great way to cool down on hot days. Use fresh, clean water, keep sessions supervised, and provide shade and drinking water nearby. Never leave puppies unattended around water, even shallow pools. Cool puppies are happy puppies.
