Golden hour
Ahmad suggested an evening walk to the meadow, and Buddy was immediately in favor. The late afternoon sun turned everything golden: the grass, the trees, even the puppies’ fur. Buddy led the way down the familiar path, his shadow stretching long beside him. The air was warm and sweet with the smell of wildflowers. It was, Buddy thought, the perfect time of day.
The meadow
The meadow opened up before them, a sea of tall grass waving in the breeze. Buddy waded in, the grass tickling his belly, and the others followed. Grasshoppers jumped, butterflies drifted, and a skylark sang high above. Luna chased a butterfly, Buddy tracked a grasshopper, and Mac simply rolled in the grass, covering himself in seeds and sunshine.
The old oak
In the middle of the meadow stood an ancient oak tree, its branches spreading wide. The puppies flopped in its shade, panting happily. Ahmad sat against the trunk. Buddy climbed into Ahmad’s lap, which was a tight fit but he managed it. They sat together, watching the light change, feeling the breeze. Some moments do not need words, or barks.
Sunset colors
The sun began to set, painting the sky in shades of orange, pink, and gold. The puppies watched, mesmerized. Luna’s fur glowed copper. Mac’s ears were backlit like stained glass. Buddy sat very straight, as if paying respects to the day. The meadow turned from gold to amber to rose, and the first stars appeared. It was the most beautiful thing they had ever seen.
Evening sounds
As the light faded, the evening sounds began. Crickets chirped, an owl hooted in the distance, and the grass rustled with small creatures starting their night shift. Buddy listened intently, cataloging each sound. Luna rested her head on her paws, sleepy and content. Mac, who had been quiet for once, sighed deeply. The meadow at dusk was a peaceful place.
The walk home
They walked home in the twilight, the path silvered by moonrise. Buddy stayed close to Ahmad’s side, occasionally looking back to make sure Luna and Mac were following. The house lights glowed warm in the distance. It had been a simple walk, just a meadow at sunset, but Buddy felt it had been something special. He would remember this evening.
Night
Back home, the puppies curled up together, tired from the walk and full of the day’s beauty. Buddy dreamed in golden colors. Outside, the stars shone over the meadow, and the old oak stood guard. Tomorrow would bring new adventures, but tonight was for rest, and for remembering the sunset field.
Field notes
Evening walks in open spaces are wonderful for dogs, offering new sights, sounds, and smells. Keep dogs close as light fades, bring a light for visibility, and watch for wildlife. A sunset walk is good for the body and the soul, for puppies and humans alike.
